Contact Lenses and Astigmatism

If you have astigmatism, you have probably been frustrated at one time or another at the options available for treatment.  In years past, astigmatism was sometimes difficult to treat with contact lenses, depending on the severity.  Even now, it can be a process of trial-and-error in finding the right prescription and contact lenses for you. Today, however, more choices are available than ever before.

Toric lenses are the go-to choice for eye care specialists treating patients with astigmatism. A toric lens is made heavier on the bottom to prevent it from rotating on the eye.  Toric lenses can be either soft or semi-rigid.

Astigmatism bifocal contact lenses are an option, if soft toric lenses didn’t work for you or if you want to continue wearing contact lenses after the age of 40, when presbyopia settles in.  Newer contact lens designs address the issue of eye dryness, allow for longer wear and are sometimes made to be semi-disposable.
